By-Law No. 143
"TO AUTHORIZE THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF ELGIN
TO LEVY THE SUM OF TWENTY-TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS UPON THE
SEVERAL MUNICIPALITIES IN THE COUNTY OF ELGIN FOR THE GEN-
ERAL PURPOSES OF THE COUNTY IN THE YEAR ONE THOUSAND EIGHT
HUNDRED AND~SIXTY-SIX".

WHEREAS it is necessary and expedient to levy and
collect in the several Municipalities of the County of Elgin
a sufficient sum for the general purposes of said County in
the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty-six.
WHEREAS by the Eleventh Section of the Act Twenty-
second Victoria Chapter Fifty-five of the Consolidated Statutes
for Upper Canada the Council of every Municipality is required
every year to make estimates of all sums which may be required
for the lawful purposes of the County, City, Town, Township
or Village for the year in which such sums are required to be
levied. And by the twelfth section of said Act it is recited
that the Council of every Municipality may pass one By-Law or
a rate or rates of so much in the dollar upon the assessed
value of the property therein as the Council deems sufficient
to raise the sums required on such estimates.
AND WHEREAS as estimate has been made by the Council
of the County of Elgin of the sums required for the lawful pur-
poses of the Municipality of the County of Elgin for the current
year showing that the sum of twenty-two thousand dollars will
be required for the lawful purposes of the County of Elgin
exclusive of Schools as follows -

General Purposes - Members Wages, etc. 2,824

BE IT THEREFORE enacted by the Municipal Council
of the County of Elgin by virtue of the authority aforesaid
that there shall be levied and collected in the several
Municipalities of the County of Elgin in the year one thou-
sand eight hundred and sixty-six the sum of twenty-two thou-
sand dollars for the general expenditures and liabilities of
the County of Elgin and for the lawful purposes thereof.
AND IT IS ALSO enacted that there shall be levied
and collected a rate of five tenths of a cent in the dollar
upon the assessed value of the property in the said County
of Elgin for the purpose of raising the said sum of twenty-
two thousand dollars, and that sàid amount be apportioned
and collected in the several Municipalities of the County
of Elgin as contained in the schedule forming part of this
By-Law and the full amounts paid over to the County Treasurer
as by law directed.
AND IT IS ALSO enacted that this By-Law shall be in
force and take effect from and after the twenty-second day of
June one thousand eight hundred and sixty-six.
