WHEREAS by the thirteenth section of the Assess-
ment Act 32nd Victoria Chapter 36 it is enacted that -
TO RAISE AMOUNTS FOR COUNTY RATES FOR THE YEAR
The Council of every County shall every year make
an estimate of all sums which may be required for the lawful
purposes of the County for the year in which such sums are
required to be levied.
And by the 14th section of said Act it is enacted
that the Council of every Municipality may pass By-laws
authorizing the levying and collection of a rate or rates
in the dollar upon the assessed value of the property there-
in as the Council may deem sufficient to raise the sums re-
qùired on said estimates.
AND Ú\fl1EREAS the Council of the County of Elgin
has made an estimate of all sums required for the lawful
purposes of the Municipality for the year 1876 shewing that
the sum of Forty Thousand One Hundred and Thirty-Three Dollars
will be required to be raised for County purposes during the
current year exclusive of school rate.

AND WHEREAS by the 74th section
Act it is enacted -
That the Council of a County in apportioning a
County rate amongst the several townships, towns and villages
in the County shall in order that the sums may be assessed
equally on the whole of the property returned on the Assessment
Rolls for such townships, towns and villages as finally re-
vised and equalized for the preceding year be the basis upon
which the apportionment is made.
BE IT THEREFORE enacted by the Corporation of the
County of Elgin in Council assembled and by virtue of the
authority aforesaid -
That the sum of Eighteen Thousand Seven Hundred
Dollars be raised in the Municipalities of the County of
Elgin during the present year for Debentures and Coupons of
the Canada Southern Railway and that a rate of one and two
tenth mills in the dollar be levied on the rateable property
in said County to raise said amount.
That the sum of Twenty One Thousand Four Hundred
and Thirty Three Dollars be raised in the several Municipal-
ities in said County during the present year for general
County purposes and that a rate of one mill and three tenth
mills in the dollars be levied on the rateable property in
the County to raise said amount

AND IT IS enacted that the said rates shall be
apportioned and levied upon the amount of the rateable prop-
erty as equalized for the preceding year as per schedule
herewith.
