September 23, 2002 Waste Management Committee WASTE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE rd SEPTEMBER 23, 2002 1:30 p.m. MUNICIPALITY OF WEST ELGIN COUNCIL CHAMBERS PRESENT: Deputy Mayor Graham Warwick, Mayor Duncan McPhail. Clerk Norma Bryant, Sam Kirschner, Jack Falkins, Ron Aubertin. Deputy Mayor Warwick called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m. Jack Falkins reported that recycling is up with more plastics, truck is almost at limit. Ron Aubertin reported that there is a bit more recycling in garbage, perhaps an advertisement in paper may help remind people to recycle. Mayor McPhail noted that we are getting good compliance, recycling is at limit, therefore program is working. Sam Kirschener reported that recycling markets are working well, except coloured glass. Deputy Mayor Warwick enquired about problem with covering in August. Sam apologized siting personal reasons and working off site for getting behind one week. Deputy Mayor Warwick reminded that MOE certificate specifies the frequency of cover and we must adhere to it. Jack is to determine if the previous gentlemen is still interested in leaf collection. He is to let the Clerk know and collection dates will be set and advertisements placed. A discussion took place regarding household hazardous waste. The Clerk is to contact Green Line to determine where their station is and if we could have access (West Lorne already participates in Green Line). A discussion took place regarding our tipping fees – are they competitive? Sam reported that a lot of refrigerators (25 in past 2 months) were being left. It was decided that people who were leaving fridges would be requested to fill out a form stating their name, address, phone number and type of refrigerator so that we can track. Mayor McPhail commented on the attendant’s building and suggested improvements should be made. A notice is to be given to the apartments about Pizza Place in Rodney regarding the use of clear bags and recycling. The meeting adjourned at 2:25 p.m.
